New plans for Tanjung Aru Beach not convincing

Monday 2 June 2014

Likas assemblyman Junz Wong wants CM Musa Aman to reveal the 'full' masterplan for Tanjung Aru Beach.

KOTA KINABALU: Public consultation for the Tanjung Aru beach development closed today instead of the previously promised June 6.

The news came as a surprise to SM Muthu, co-founder of Save Open Space Kota Kinabalu (SOS KK) who questioned the move.

“We don’t understand what is happening and who exactly is in charge. The state had previously promised that June 6 would be the last day but it looks like this is not so.

“Chief Minister Musa Aman had also said that Tanjung Aru beach would be returned to its previous glory. But what does he mean by previous glory?

“The issue of sand erosion should also not be raised as a reason for development.

“There should be a litigation to counter the problem instead of jumping straight to the idea of developing the area.

“These are excuses made by the government as a backdoor way to make claim to public land that is supposed to be for the people.”

“We are not convinced that Tanjung Aru beach would not be privatised as promised by Musa.”

Musa yesterday announced that the masterplan for the Tanjung Aru Eco Development (TAED) had been finalised and approved by the Tanjung Aru Eco Development Sdn Bhd (TAEDSB) board of directors.

Musa, who is chairman for TAEDSB, said that the masterplan would be tabled for the Cabinet’s consideration soon and promised that the beach is ‘not for sale’.

The plan would include the rejuvenation of the beach as well as Prince Philip Park, which would be meant for the public community’s benefit.

It would also address the issue of years of erosion and pollution at the beach.

Likas assemblyman Junz Wong urged Musa to reveal the plans.

He said TAED’s detailed plans should be open for public consultation before tabling it to the Cabinet.

“Why won’t the state government-owned project TAED be showcased to the stakeholders via people of Sabah before it is showcased to the world?

“It is confusing to see almost the whole Tanjung Aru beach zoned as ‘Hotel and Resort zone’ when so many plans has been announced to keep the beach for the public.

“Display the masterplan for public consultation now. After all, people of Sabah are confused and afraid that the beach could be robbed from them in the name of development and turned into a rich people’s playground just like Sutera Harbour.”
