The man was detained for raising the flag of the ‘Sulu Sultanate’ which can influence the patriotism of the Suluk people living as citizens in Sabah for a long time.

LAHAD DATU: A man who claimed to have been authorised by the “Sulu Sultan” to manage the people of Suluk in the district here, was detained during a special operation by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom), at Kampung Long Danau, Jalan Silabukan in Lahad Datu, early this morning.

ESSCom director-general Mohammad Mentek said based on information from the ESSCom Defence Division, the 57-year-old man was detained for raising the flag of the ‘Sulu Sultanate’ which can influence the patriotism of the Suluk people living as citizens in Sabah for a long time.

However, he did not reveal specific details about the man who was detained with a photocopy of his identity card, for security reasons.

Mohammad said ESSCom officers had spotted the flag that was raised in front of the man’s house while patrolling the area at about 9pm on Sunday.

“Our officers had spotted the flag at one of the houses in the village and reported the matter to the ESSCom defence division before the ESSCom Brigade based in Cenderawasih, (Felda Sahabat) was notified,” he said.

The suspect was later taken to the Lahad Datu district police headquarters for further investigations, he said.

Long Danau is situated a long way from Kampung Tanduo where armed intruders had landed in February.
