Bumburing’s pro-opposition Sabah Reform Movement to explore the challenge of becoming a political party
KOTA KINABALU: Turning pro-opposition Sabah Reform Movement (Angkatan Perubahan Sabah) into a political party is expected to be one of the resolutions to be tabled at the non-governmental organisation’s first bi-annual general meeting tomorrow.
More than 200 APS delegates and observers are to attend the BGM at RSS Dalit Restaurant beginning 1.30pm.
The movement’s information chief Lesaya Sorudim told Borneo Insider today that APS president Wilfred Bumburing will open the meeting after delivering his policy speech at 2pm.
Debates on the policy speech will commence soon after.
“Several resolution are expected to be tabled and passed among them are issues affecting the political and cultural direction of the organisation in the future,” Sorudim added.
Registering APS as a political entity was expected after Bumburing won the Tamparuli state seat in the May 5, 2013 general elections on a PKR ticket. He also contested for the Tuaran parliamentary seat as the incumbent but lost.
The former United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) deputy president formed APS and launched it in a ceremony attended by Anwar Ibrahim on July 29, 2012.
Bumburing pledged support for the Pakatan Rakyat coalition in the general elections and was given the task to take on the national coalition (Barisan Nasional) government in constituencies where the majority voters are non-Muslim Bumiputera.
In the elections the opposition coalition of PKR, DAP and PAS allocated APS five parliamentary constituencies to contest, Tuaran, Kota Marudu, Penampang, Keningau and Pensiangan. APS-sponsored candidate only won Penampang.
Bumburing and Terrence Siambun were the only winners, triumphing in the state seats of Tamparuli and Moyog, respectively. However, other candidates under his banner failed in Kiulu, Bongawan, Kundasang, Tambunan, Liawan, Sook, Sugut, Kuamut, Labuk and Kemabong.
After the elections dust settled, Bumburing made the surprise announcement that although he won Tamparuli on PKR ticket, he was not a member of the party and had in fact no intention to officially apply for membership.
Instead, he pledged to continue support for the opposition “as APS shared the same objectives with Pakatan Rakyat as far as Sabah’s rights is concerned”.
Several newly registered Sabah-based political parties have reportedly approached Bumburing to join them but the seasoned politician has avoided comment of the matter.
