Prime Minister Najib Razak should find a “smarter and capable” replacement for Deputy Home Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, who has been described as “ignorant” and “insensitive”..
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah PKR has called for Prime Minsiter Najib Tun Razak to replace Deputy Home Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar for his ignorance and insensitive demeanor.
State deputy chairman Christina Liew said Wan Junaidi’s latest suggestion that island resort operators cease operations because the government could not secure Sabah seas, is not only insensitive but detrimental to the image of the country.
Liew who is also Api-Api Assemblywoman said if Wan Junaidi is incapable of coming up with any effective solutions to the problem, then perhaps he should just step down and let someone else who is more capable to do the job.
Noting that this was not the first time Wan Junaidi had made such an insensitive statement in regards to serious issues, citing his previous statement that “Malays more ‘sensitive’ than other races to statutory rape issue”, she urged Najib to replace Wan Junaidi with someone who is “smarter and capable”.
She quipped that Wan Junaidi’s continued presence in the Federal cabinet would reflect badly on the prime minister, and BN as a whole.
“Is he (Wan Junaidi) the best candidate that the Barisan Nasional (BN) has for the job? Italian historian cum politician Niccolo Machiavelli once said: “The first method for estimating the intelligence of a ruler is to look at the men he has around him,” she said.
She continued that the State government should perhaps take a cue from Wan Junaidi’s statement, and to demand for more say in the security of Sabah.
“Wan Junaidi’s statement is a clear indication that the State government can no longer solely depend on the Federal government to provide for the security of the State and its people.
“Under such a circumstances, it’s only proper and urgent that the State government must start thinking and working on alternatives to better safeguard the state and its people,” she stressed.
Liew was commenting on Wan Junaidi’s response to last Wednedays’ abduction of two foreign nationals – a China and Philippines national – from a resort in Semporna. The resort is barely 5 minutes boat ride from Semporna which comes under the purview of Eastern Sabah Security Command (esscom) centre.
Sabah police had said it was an “inside” job. The victims are reportedly being held captive in southern Mindanao in Philippines. Esscom reportedly said the captives were in safe condition.
