KOTA KINABALU: Another fatal train accident occurred along the railway line between Bongawan and Beaufort Friday.
In the 11.30am incident, a 17-year-old motorcyclist was rammed into by an oncoming train when he attempted to illegally cross the tracks.
Sabah Railway Department general manager, Datuk Mohd Zain Mohd Said confirmed the incident.
He was, however, unable to provide more details on the incident.
Zain however urged the public not to risk their lives by attempting to cross the tracks illegally.
He explained that the train normally travels at a speed of 40 – 50km per hour and it has no emergency braking system. Thus when there is an emergency situation, all that the train driver can do is to sound the horn.
He also expressed regret that despite repeated reminders by the department, many road-users, the villagers especially, are often found taking risk to cross the railways illegally.
The latest incident is the second fatal railways crossing incident in the state for this year.
On 19 June this year, one Hong Kong tourist was killed while another three were injured when the car they were travelling in was rammed into by a train, when they attempted to cross the railways along the Jalan Lintas, while rushing to the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA).
